The left-back has endured a tumultuous time with the Red Devils under Mourinho, making just 22 appearances in the Premier League under the Portuguese manager.
Shaw found himself second fiddle to converted winger Ashley Young last season and was even substituted off at half-time of United's FA Cup win over Brighton in March.
The 23-year-old is entering the final year of his contract at Old Trafford with Mourinho publicly known to have been chasing a new left-back with Juventus’ Alex Sandro mentioned as a top target with Kieran Tierney of Celtic a younger alternative.
England international Shaw's career has stalled ever since he suffered a horrific double leg break in a fodboldtrøjer Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven in September 2015.
But the ex-Southampton prospect has declared that he intends to use the current pre-season, with Young on holiday after his World Cup involvement for the Three Lions, to prove a point to his manager.
Reflecting on his United career, Shaw admitted: ”It has been disappointing. I look back over the last few years and I've not had a massive run in the team.
"The year I broke my leg I felt strong - it was unfortunate.
"It's annoying for me to say I need to prove myself. But I know what I can do and that's why I'm still here. I'm sure that's what the manager thinks.
"I don't think I would still be involved if the manager didn't believe in me. I've had a good chat with him and I look forward to the new season and getting back to my best."
Shaw will hope to take advantage of Young's absence across a five-game tour of the United States in which they face Club America (tomorrow, 3am) and San Jose Earthquakes (Sunday, 10pm) this weekend.
A trio of International Champions Cup fixtures then awaits against AC Milan in California, Liverpool in Michigan and Real Madrid in Miami.
And the defender - the most expensive teenager in the world when he joined Billige liverpool drakt United for £30million in June 2014 - is hoping to use those matches to show to Mourinho that he is worthy of a place in his squad for the upcoming season.
He told reporters: “The next five games are all about fitness, but I want to try and prove to the manager that I can be in his team, not just in these games.
"When everyone comes back and everyone is fit and ready, I still want to be that first name on the team-sheet.
"It's time for me to show him over the next four weeks what I can do and why I deserve to be in this team."
